Toos Thermal Power Plant
The Toos Power Plant, with four 150 megawatt steam units, is one of the distinguished power plants in the country and one of the largest electricity generation centers in Razavi Khorasan Province. The plant is located near the shrine of Imam Ali ibn Musa al Reza (peace be upon him), 12 kilometers northwest of the holy city of Mashhad, between the foothills of the Binalud Mountains and the city of Toos, the resting place of the renowned Persian poet, Hakim Abolqasem Ferdowsi.
The contract for the construction of the power plant was signed in August 1978 with Brown Boveri and Patleh companies. In 1981, the project was reviewed and
revised by the German company Brown Boveri, after which construction activities officially commenced. In 1982, the contract for the construction of the power plant’s boiler was signed with the Austrian company Wagner Biro, and its implementation began. The first unit of the power plant was connected to the national grid in November 1985, and the remaining units were commissioned and brought into operation by the end of 1987.
