The Tabriz Power Plant is located 15 kilometers southeast of the city of Tabriz, along the Tabriz–Azarshahr road, on an area of approximately 213 hectares. The plant consists of two 368 megawatt steam units and two 32 megawatt gas units and is connected to the national grid through 230 kV and 400 kV substations.

The contract for the Tabriz Thermal Power Plant project was signed on November 20, 1976, covering civil works, boilers, the machine room, water treatment facilities, cooling towers, as well as the construction and installation of the turbogenerator, condenser, and both low pressure and high pressure heaters.

The primary fuel for the two steam units of the Tabriz Power Plant is mazut (heavy fuel oil), which is supplied via a pipeline from the Tabriz Refinery. In addition, the plant’s boiler was designed to operate on natural gas as well. After several years of delay, the conversion to natural gas was finally completed in 2003 through a contract with Alstom France, after which the gas fired system was commissioned and put into operation.
